National Safety Month: More Than Hard Hats and Checklists

Here, safety is built through communication, accountability, and people who care enough to speak up.

Out here, conditions can change fast. One minute it’s clear skies, the next minute someone’s sliding across an icy parking lot holding a coffee they definitely shouldn’t have tried carrying all at once.

That’s why safety can’t just live in a binder or hang on a wall poster.

At CityServiceValcon, we’ve spent nearly a century building a Courageous Culture rooted in something pretty simple: folks looking out for each other. National Safety Month feels like the perfect time to recognize the everyday habits that help keep our employees, customers, and neighbors safe.

Good Information Travels Fast

Sometimes it’s a route update. Sometimes it’s a reminder to watch for icy steps or double-check tire pressure before heading out. Other times it’s a driver sending in a photo from the field so the next person knows what to expect.

That kind of communication matters. When information flows openly, teams stay prepared, and they’re ready to help each other out.

Raise Your Hand

A strong safety culture depends on someone being comfortable enough to say, “Hey, something here doesn’t look right.”

That only works when folks know they’ll be heard.

Our team members are encouraged to ask questions, flag concerns, and speak up early, even if the issue seems small. Because small observations have a funny way of preventing much bigger problems later on.

Turns out, looking out for others works just as well on the job as it does in the neighborhood.

We Take Safety Personally

We don’t have a Courageous Culture because a checklist told us to. We have one because we care about the people around us.

At the end of the day, everyone deserves to get home safely. That motto has guided how we serve our customers for more than 90 years, and it still shapes how we operate today.
