Building a Culture of Safety at CityServiceValcon
Part 2 in our Courageous Culture series
Talking about courageous culture is one thing. Seeing how it plays out on a normal workday is another. At CityServiceValcon, it shows up in small habits, real conversations, and the choices employees make when conditions get hairy.
Below are some of the ways courageous culture takes shape across our organization.
The Communication Loop That Keeps Our Team Safe
It may seem simple, but safety often starts with clear communication. One of our most bite-sized information staff needs to keep safety top of mind. Drivers might get a reminder about winter slip risks or a nudge to double-check tire pressure and registration. Many even send in photos from their route to show what they are noticing. Office teams receive their own version with practical tips and awareness suited to their day-to-day work.
And the Blitz is only one part of the picture. Customer Service Representatives pass along details about tricky hills or new construction that might affect a visit. Drivers send updates from customer sites so the next person knows what to expect. Managers help sort and prioritize concerns so issues land with the right folks quickly.
When information travels freely, drivers step into each truck with a clearer picture of where they’re headed, and our deliveries run smoother.
If You See Something, Say Something
A strong safety culture only works when people feel comfortable raising a hand and saying, “Something here isn’t right.” That comfort comes from solid training and from managers who build trust so their employees know their concerns will be taken seriously.
New team members start building that confidence during orientation and ride-alongs, where they watch experienced technicians walk through real situations and talk openly about what they notice. They learn early that questions are encouraged and that even a small observation can spare someone else a big problem later.
That foundation is what makes tools like our Stop Work Authority so effective. If something looks off, crews are expected to pause, reassess, and choose the wiser option. A recent example says it all: a driver arrived at a site where the tank’s clock gauge was not working. With no way to confirm capacity, he chose to walk away.
After the call is made, we track what we learn from it. Hazard observations, near misses, and incidents are logged, which helps us spot trends and follow up on anything that needs attention. Over time, these small data points point the way to better training and stronger processes. When people feel supported enough to slow down, speak up, or stop a job, everyone benefits.
Where Safety Meets Service
Courageous culture is not something we talk about once a year. It is how we work, communicate, and make decisions every day. If you want a propane provider that puts safety at the center of everything, connect with your local CityServiceValcon office and let us know how we can help.
