CityServiceValcon’s Home Heating Safety Checklist
A practical guide for the cold-weather months
At CityServiceValcon, safety comes first in everything we do. It is part of how we work with each other and how we show up for our neighbors. Propane heats our spaces, dries our laundry, fires our stoves, and keeps us warm through some long winters. And when one fuel does that much, safety needs to lead the way.
We put together a practical, fridge-friendly checklist with tips every propane-heating household should know.
Propane Tank and Heating Systems Basics
A few simple habits can help you stay comfortable and out of harm’s way throughout the colder months.
Keep the area around your tank clear so your technician can access it safely.
If your heating system uses forced air, keep vents clear and replace furnace filters every few months to support good airflow. This helps your system run efficiently and reduces wear on equipment.
Stay alert to changes in your heating system. If you get a new appliance, or hear or smell something odd, let your technician know.
Make sure every adult in your house knows how to turn off your tank in case of emergency. The Propane Education and Research Council (PERC) offers a quick video that explains the basics.
After severe weather, look for anything that seems out of place. If you spot possible damage around your tank, don’t be a hero! Do not attempt to move or adjust equipment yourself. Just give your local CityServiceValcon office a ring.
What to Do if You Smell Gas
Propane is treated with a warning odor to help you identify leaks. If you ever notice that smell, take action ASAP.
Do not use phones, switches, or anything that could create a spark. If there are already smoking materials or open flames, extinguish them if you can do so safely.
Leave the area and call us or your local emergency number.
Keep out until a trained technician tells you it’s okay to return.
Do not use any propane equipment until your system has been inspected and cleared by a member of our team.

Keeping Your Family Protected From Carbon Monoxide
All fuel-burning appliances have the potential to produce carbon monoxide if they are not maintained or vented correctly. Staying aware is key!
Make sure your fuel-burning appliances are properly vented and install carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home, especially near sleeping areas.
Learn the signs of carbon monoxide exposure, including headache, dizziness, nausea, or unusual fatigue.
If an alarm sounds or you suspect carbon monoxide, gather everyone, including pets, and leave right away.
Call for help from a safe location and wait until you get the “all clear” before going back inside.
