Keep your vacant home safe through the winter
Fall is here and you know what that means… it’s time to winterize your home before heading south for the winter. You’ll need to ensure your vacant home is protected from theft, water damage, heating or electrical problems while you’re away. Here are a few tips to help you prepare.

First, try to make your home look as though it is continuously occupied. Don’t forget to forward your mail and stop newspaper delivery. If possible, try to arrange for someone – whether a relative, friend, neighbor or professional service – to remove snow after storms. Finally, ensure motion-sensitive exterior lights are installed and operating properly.

Next you’ll want to take specific measures to prevent and deter thieves. Confirm that your alarm system is activated and in good working order. Secure your windows and doors with deadbolts and locks. If you are using sliding glass or French doors, make sure you have slide locks installed.

You can protect your pipes by shutting off the water and draining your water supply or by keeping the furnace running if you intend to keep the water turned on. You’ll also want to make sure your heating system has been inspected and serviced. We can fill your fuel tanks and monitor them for you, all winter long.

The last thing you need to hear as you lay on a beach in sunny Key West is that something is amiss back home. Take these precautions and contact your friends at CityServiceValcon to ensure your vacation home stays safe and sound all winter long.

Where’s your small airport winter weather guidebook?

As a small or mid-size regional airport, are you eyeing the recent weather? Perhaps you’re trying to come up with a plan of attack as winter approaches. If so, we can help.

The fact is, winter weather can disrupt airport operations. A lack of proper preparation can escalate these disruptions and turn them into potential safety issues. It’s important to take the time to examine a range of existing procedures and evaluate their effectiveness.

Do you have a guidebook prepared to help you prepare for a disruptive weather event? If a large storm rolls through, will you know how to effectively operate and recover?

If you don’t already have a set of guidelines or guidebook in place, let us help with some recommendations. Your winter weather readiness guidebook should include:

Operations: Weather, friction and operational control
Equipment: Vehicles, chemicals, drift controls
Personnel: Human factors, timing and individual assignments
Finance: Budgetary and risk analysis, procurement
Environmental: Permitting, regulatory and compliance

There’s a lot to think about as you prepare your small airport for the inevitable coming of winter. Fortunately, we can help set some of your fuel storage and delivery worries aside. Contact your friends at CityServiceValcon today.

Everything you need to know about aviation fuel
Transportation runs on fuel. Fast transportation across continents requires aviation fuel. But how much do you really know about this important substance?

Aviation fuel is a specialized type of fuel. As with other types, aviation fuel is petroleum-based. It is used specifically to power aircraft. Because of the nature of aircraft travel, aviation fuel is usually of higher quality than fuels used in other applications. The primary reason for this is the fact that aviation fuel generally uses additives to reduce the risk of icing or explosion, mainly due to the high temperatures involved.

There are two types of aviation fuel:

Avgas: The most common, aviation gas is used in standard, internal-combustion, spark-ignited aircraft engines. Unlike motor vehicle gas, avgas is formulated to perform consitently under a wide variety of applications.

Jet fuel: Jet fuel is quite distinct. This clear, straw-colored fuel is similar to diesel fuel. It can be used in either compression ignition or turbine engines. There are two types of jet fuel, Jet A which is unleaded kerosene and Jet B, a naphtha-kerosene blend. Jet A fuel requires a very high temperature to ignite.

While some aircraft applications also use compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG), the majority use avgas or jet fuel. Aircraft running on turbofans can use a wide range of different fuels. The industry is moving more toward liquid, syngas and bio jet fuel, all representing the vanguard of the aviation fuel industry.

Do you have questions about what aviation fuel you should use? We can help. Contact your friends at CityServiceValcon today.

What if the grid goes down?
There’s been a lot of recent talk concerning the condition of the U.S. electric system. Unfortunately, much of the buzz is warranted. After all, there’s been no shortage of high profile blackouts to get people’s attention. Compounding the problem is a record-keeping system that inadequately reports vandalism, outages and other problems, whether at the substation level or otherwise.

Are the nation’s substations adequately protected against potential criminals or terrorists? This concern has led the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to require that utility companies step up their efforts to protect substations and other vital infrastructure.

Part of the problem lies in the sprawl of the U.S. electric system. Although it is regulated by the government, its primary owners and operators are the utility companies themselves. There is little consistency among players, both big and small.

With both local and national budgets shrinking, less money is available for vital grid updates. Far too often municipalities use the money for other more pressing matters. It’s when the grid goes down that the pressing nature of grid improvements will become clear.

Most likely, your business relies on electricity to get the job done. The last thing you need is a power outage. Contact us today to find out how we can help you be prepared should the grid go out.

Biofuels: The debate rages on
With oil news in the spotlight lately, many people are wondering what is going on with biofuels. Certainly, turning plants into fuel sounds really cool and really green, but the story runs deeper than that. Some biofuels impact food supplies and actually put out more greenhouse gas emissions than their fossil fuel counterparts.

The fact is, low-emissions alternative fuels are still one of the three major pillars of global decarbonization efforts. First generation biofuels – essentially alcohol made from food crops – paved the way for second-generation biofuels, created from wood and crop waste.

What it really boils down to is whether or not the energy produced from a particular biofuel is also produced from an organic material, like corn or sugar. Producers are aiming for carbon-neutrality. Plants absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, but they also emit it when they are burned for fuel. While some argue that plant emissions don’t count because the carbon was already there, the debate rages on.

Another point of contention lies in land use. Considering biofuels require much more productive land than fossil fuels, some wonder if these energy sources are truly viable over the long term.

As with most environmental issues, there’s a good and bad side to the story, but biofuels hold great promise as one of the pillars of our nation’s industry infrastructure. How they evolve in the marketplace over time, however, is anybody’s guess.

The unsung heroes of heavy machinery operation
At CityServiceValcon, we eat, sleep, and breathe lubricants. Sure, we can accommodate a vast array of fuel service and storage needs, we can’t deny a little fascination with the science behind lubrication. So we want to take a deeper look into what lubrication really is.

By definition, lubrication refers to a technique that reduces friction between two surfaces, accomplished through the use of a lubricant. A lubricant does not necessarily have to be liquid. It can also be a solid or liquid dispersion gas.

In a real world sense, lubrication could even be imagined as a reduction of friction when a car hydroplanes across a wet road. In this case, water is the lubricant.

In its best form, and in the mechanical sense, lubrication provides a far better environment for load-bearing equipment to operate in. Through lubrication, bearings don’t destroy each other. Lubrication relieves excessive structural stresses on heavy machinery components.

Whether you are operating a piston, pump, cam, or turbine, lubrication is required to relieve the pressure between surfaces operating within close proximity to each other and moving in relative motion.

Without lubrication, extreme heat and friction can quite literally weld the surfaces of two different objects together. Without lubrication, any number of heavy duty and advanced machines would not be possible.

Here at CityServiceValcon, we are proud to offer a vast array of lubricants, by type and specification. No matter what your need, chances are we can meet it. Contact us today to learn more about our selection of high quality lubricants.

The benefits of living remotely

While living remotely may not be for everyone, we certainly feel that it’s a great way to live. We ourselves live away from the crowds and large populations that some suburban towns and city centers come with. And we can’t tell you how much we love it! Here are some of the greatest aspects of living away from the grid.

The view can be breathtaking.

Can you count the stars at night? Certainly not if you live in a crowded area. If you live away from the city, almost every night is a perfect night for star gazing. And aside from that, you are much more likely to live around the beautiful outdoors. When untamed nature is your backyard, you know that the Earth’s natural beauty is breathtaking and always worth the extra travel time to get into town.

Silence is always the answer.

There is a simple peace that comes with living away from large populations. You can hear yourself think, you can hear crickets chirping in the evening, and you don’t have to hear your neighbors yelling or sirens constantly shrieking. There is something so beautiful about the still silence that comes from living remotely.

The crime rate is nearly as low as it goes.

If you have kids, you know that crime rates in your neighborhood are always something to take into consideration. When you live around less people, you are less likely to live around lots of crime. This isn’t always true, but is usually the case for most remote neighborhoods and towns. Living remotely means you are able to feel safe in your own home and can spend your time enjoying the simpler things in life instead.

If living remotely is for you, remember that you never have to worry about fuel because we can deliver it right to your home. At CityServiceValcon, we understand the benefits of living remotely and we certainly want you to make the most of your way of living.
