What you need to know about sharing the road with transport trucks
  • While professional truck drivers are very good at minding the road and keeping passenger cars in mind, they aren’t superhuman. It takes work on everyone’s part to ensure safety reigns on our roads.

To reduce your risk of a crash while driving next to or around transport trucks, it’s important to keep a number of factors in mind.

First, remember that truck drivers are somewhat limited when it comes to how quickly they can slow down or accelerate. Heavy commercial motor vehicles also require more room to make turns. Their blind spots are much larger and have a wider angle. Follow these tips to successfully share the road with transport trucks:

    • Keep clear of a truck’s blind spots, represented on all sides, the front and rear.

    • Do not cut in front of the truck. Considering the amount of weight they are pulling, cutting them off is very dangerous.

    • Provide lots of room for passing. A good rule of thumb is at least the length of the road or once you fully see their windshield in your review mirror.

    • Avoid what is called “the squeeze,” which is the space in which a truck will pivot when making a right turn. The last thing you want to do is get “squeezed” between the truck and a curb.

    • Big rigs create turbulence in their wake. Make sure to leave extra room behind them so as not to get buffeted by the turbulence.

As the economy continues to improve and freight shipments increase around the country, more and more people will be sharing the road with transport vehicles.

Keep these tips in mind and you’re sure to arrive at your destination safely without endangering either yourself or the truck drivers operating around you.

Could we see the highest fuel prices in three years?
  • Could we be a couple months into a year of high gas prices? Some say 2017 could bring some of the highest fuel prices we’ve seen in three years.

According to Gas Buddy’s 2017 Fuel Price Outlook, motorists may wind up shelling out over $52 billion more in 2017 than they did in 2016, with an average price horizon sitting around $2.49.

There are some other interesting facts in the report:

The $52 billion increase will put the total number at $355 billion spent on good ole’ gasoline. Consider that motorists saved $39 billion in 2016 over the prior year, and the $52 billion increase is especially jarring
Expect a jump this spring when the seasonal switch in blends occurs. Between mid-February and May, gas prices could rise as much as 35 – 60 cents.
Expect the largest cities in the country to hit $3 a gallon.
Another 20 of the nation’s largest cities could also hit, or average out around $3 a gallon.

There’s a lot that goes into the yearly forecast. With the industry hoping for a revival, domestic rig counts are on the rise. Still, from taxation changes to individual state measures, there are a number of factors that could impact where fuel prices end up in 2017.

One thing you can be sure of is that we will be right here, reporting on the latest in fuel price news. We understand that fuel price affects your business, so don’t hesitate to stop by our blog for all the latest updates.

What’s in store for the price of oil in 2017?
If expectations are accurate, the new year may bring a new high in oil prices. According to one estimate, American drivers could find themselves shelling out an additional $52 billion in 2017 than the year before, according to GasBuddy.

This would essentially mean gas prices could hit an average near the $2.50 mark, up from the 2016 average of $2.13. If we do see this kind of rise, it would represent the largest jump in quite some time, a shock to consumers used to deflated prices over the past four years.

Sad to say, but it appears the era of falling prices is approaching its end. Although a stronger economy could offset higher gas prices, it’s no secret that higher fuel prices do not benefit the economy.

So, what’s behind the potential price rise? The crucial factor is the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries’ (OPEC) decision to cut back on oil production. OPEC was also successful in convincing Russia and other producers to cut back as well.

In 2014, OPEC announced that it was producing as much oil as it could and thus the door to inexpensive gas was opened. Today, the attitude is different. As major oil producing countries get ready to cut off the spigot, markets will need to adjust accordingly.

If this scenario does play out, expect a peak in May, while February looks to be the lowest for the year. Overall, higher averages are expected to play out across the country.

One wild card is the dormant American drilling market. Should prices get back above a sustained $60 barrel, growth in U.S. drilling could provide some relief in a constricting global market. But will it be enough? Only time will tell.

How to detect oil evaporation loss
Whatever your application or use for it, determining the appropriate levels of oil you need relies on a number of factors. And with some oils being more subject to evaporation loss than others, you need to know how to make the determination.

Oil evaporation loss can be caused by a number of things. One of the first places you’ll want to check is your oil drums. If your drums are stored in an area subject to high temperature fluctuations, a breathing process occurs, resulting in evaporation through the vent and bung plugs at the top of the drum.

When you have a machine that requires an oil top-up on a daily basis, the machine may not leak, but it might operate at a high enough temperature that oil evaporation occurs.

An important factor to consider is that when oil evaporates, the physical properties of the lubricant left behind inevitably changes. Since lighter molecules evaporate first, the heavier molecules left behind lose a percentage of their viscosity.

When the viscosity changes, your machine’s ability to properly lubricate itself also changes. You could wind up with lower splash tendency into the gearboxes and bearings. Restricted oil flow might cause a breakdown in your equipment.

A final consideration is an oil’s quality. Typically, lower-quality oils are more susceptible to potential evaporation.

Fortunately, we carry only the highest-quality machine oils and lubricants here at CityServiceValcon. Contact us today to find out more about how we can help make sure your machinery stays lubricated on-time, every time.

Winter propane safety storage tips
Winter is here, and with a vengeance. That means sub-freezing temperatures, snow, and ice. Wherever you are in the Intermountain West, you’ve likely had your heat running for some time now.

One way many heat their homes during the winter is through propane. Propane itself is very similar to natural gas, though it differs in that it is far more portable. Propane can be brought to you in a truck rather than through a large pipeline.

Propane is also quite safe and is environmentally sound. When a propane leak occurs, rather than go into the ground, it disperses in the air. While propane is generally safe, and incidents are rare, there are some tips you can keep in mind to ensure you are using it safely and efficiently this winter.

Clear the Driveway
That’s right, winters can be brutal and the last thing you may want to do is keep that driveway clear, but in order for the driver to ensure your propane delivery gets to your home, there must be a clear way to it. At CityServiceValcon, we take care of monitoring and delivery, all hassle-free, we just gotta’ be able to get up the driveway!

Clear the Tank Area
When a propane delivery needs to be made, it’s important there aren’t any objects, high snow mounds, or other obstructions blocking the tank. By ensuring the way is clear, you ensure safe operation for both the provider and your equipment.

Clear the Area
Always be sure to keep your senses alert. If you wake up in the middle of a dark night and think you might smell gas in your home, do not hesitate to leave immediately. Get yourself, family, and pet(s) to a safe distance and contact the authorities for help.

With these tips in mind, you’re sure to keep your home and family warm, all winter long, safely and securely. Contact us to find out how we can help!

Should you choose local or corporate?
We live in a world where the next mega-merger is just around the corner. Although the future belongs to huge companies with shareholders and board members far removed from their customers, we should never discount the value of working with a locally-owned and operated business.

The fact is, locally owned companies do a number of things better than their large, corporate counterparts. First and foremost, they are better communicators.

By their very nature, large corporations do not communicate well with their customers. It’s a basic principle, but when a customer has to claw their way through five layers of phone prompts and woefully unprepared customer service representatives, communication breaks down.

On the other hand, small- to mid-size locally-owned businesses have far fewer degrees of separation from their customers. When a customer calls, they immediately reach someone who is much closer to the decision maker – if not the decision maker themselves – than would be the entry-level call center representative working in another time zone.

Locally-owned companies are also far more agile. It’s no secret: when someone has to wade through miles of red tape just to get their unique customer service needs met, something’s wrong. One can debate until the cows come home if a customer is always right, in the literal sense. What isn’t debatable, however, is that the customer is always important. Their needs matter. Without flexibility, it’s hard to meet those needs.

At CityServiceValcon, we’re proud to embody all the values of a locally-owned and operated company. We are at the forefront of your needs. Just let us know what they are and watch us meet them.
