Welcome to the future of farming
Were you aware of the report that’s out there called Global Agricultural Robots Market 2016-2025 by Application (Field Farming, Indoor Farming, Livestock Management, Horticulture), Technology (UAVs, Driverless Tractors, Milking Robots and Others), and by Geography? Probably not.

Yet, here it is, a science fiction-style commentary on the future of one of our nation’s most important industries. So, what’s in this obtusely-named, high-dollar report? Quite a lot, actually.

It first points out the world’s population as a major driver of agricultural innovation. Sitting at over 7 billion today, it is expected we will reach 9 billion people by 2050. As a result, far more agricultural production will be required.

This is where advanced technology and robotics come in. Anyone working within the Ag industry will tell you the numbers and complexity of agricultural robots seems to grow by the month.

With the agriculture industry ripe for technological innovation, new systems are set to revolutionize the sector. As it goes, the Ag industry isn’t the only legacy industry undergoing technological disruption. Change is afoot.

Yet due to Ag’s size and importance, this change is going to be big. The report expects the global agricultural robotics market to balloon to $11.1 billion in sales by 2020. A short five years later, that number is expected to further swell to $30.8 billion.

The continued case for oil and gas
There is an ongoing debate on modern society. With so many different types of fuels coming onto the market, many are wondering if there is still a case to be made for oil and gas. Here at CityServiceValcon, we say absolutely.

Fossil fuels still have many advantages over other types of fuels. Whether it be a lack of testing, unknown reliability, or mechanical incompatibilities, novel new fuel types simply don’t have the track record that oil and gas do.

Anyone with any knowledge of the energy industry will tell you that we are still a long way away from completely replacing fossil fuels. And although they may be finite resources, advances in technology have allowed us to tap into new sources of oil and gas in ways previously unimaginable.

Even better, fossil fuel sources are generally easy to find, simply because they are closer to the the surface of the earth. Another plus can be found in their efficiency and ease-of-transport, things we happen to know a thing or two about. Whether by rail, ship, or truck, fossil fuels can be taken from one place to another with relative ease. Managing fuel transportation logistics is a careful business, one that we have spent many, many years perfecting.

The answer is remote
Gas and oil fields can sometimes span many square miles across very remote areas. In many cases, these locations lack adequate cell coverage and are located in areas where weather conditions can get quite extreme.

As a result, data communications for oil and gas fields has become an increasing problem in the age of “Big Data.” Today’s oil and gas exploration companies need a resilient, reliable, high capacity wireless network that can transmit over big distances and remain functional when the weather gets rough.

Today’s instrumentation and control panels are more advanced then ever, and they play a critical role in upstream oil and gas operations. Decades ago, things like remote terminal units and digital measurement devices were nothing more than science fiction. Now they are science fact.

Since conventional unlicensed radio systems lack the adequate bandwidth, companies are starting to combine their efforts, focusing on everything from advanced radio networks to cell, satellite, bandwidth amplifiers, and more.

Even better, when networks have multiple nodes, there is far greater redundancy in case there is a failure somewhere in the system. These networks also generally have the capacity to communicate with SCADA systems that are currently in use today.

As the volume of data produced in oil and gas field operations continues to expand exponentially, operators need solutions in accessing the huge troves of information at their fingertips. If data can be used to increase efficiency and production oversight, companies are jumping at the chance.

Oil and gas aren’t fading into the sunset
Some pundits, both inside and outside the fossil fuel industry, have been beating the death drum for oil and gas in favor of increased investment in renewable. While renewable forms of energy are absolutely necessary and may represent a large chunk of our nation’s future energy needs, oil and gas won’t be riding off into the sunset any time soon.

While electric vehicles and wind turbines are becoming evermore present within our society, they cannot power the globe all on their own, at least not yet. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), renewable sources of energy currently deliver around 22% of the globe’s energy needs, with that number expected to grow to 26% by 2020.

Obviously, this number alone proves that renewable energy simply isn’t at a point where it can displace fossil fuels. In fact, some countries are exploring ways in which they can combine digital technology, oil and gas, and renewables in order to meet demand while contributing to a cleaner environment.

Another consideration is the abundance of energy sources available to us. The United States currently produces more natural gas than it uses. Natural gas itself is the cleanest-burning fossil fuel and can easily be combined with other forms of renewable energy to increase overall efficiency and energy delivery effectiveness.

Also, when cases arise where there is not enough sun or wind to generate the needed electricity, simple gas-fired power stations can be quickly turned on to account for the deficit.

The fact is, despite a lot of promise and a huge amount of growth in the renewable sector, oil and gas will continue playing a large growth in our energy landscape for some time to come

Ghost towns of the old west
The great open West is home to history. As pioneers crossed these beautiful lands, homesteads, farms, and way stops were built. A population boom was soon to come, and not all permanent settlements would remain vibrant.

Still, many of these settlements and homesteads remain standing, acting as a window into America’s Wild West past. Within their falling wood, chipped bricks, and broken windows, they are buildings that trigger an emotional response.

Bannack, Montana
We would be remiss if we didn’t start in Montana, where we are headquartered. Bannack is widely considered one of the most well-preserved ghost towns in Montana.

Established in 1862 along Grasshopper Creek, Bannack is a listed National Historic Landmark. A little known fact about this fascinating town: Sherrif Henry Plummer was a hardened criminal! A shame they didn’t have background checks in the 19th Century.

Goodnoe Homestead, Washington
Washington State, our neighbor, is a place of changing shapes and climates. It was in an arid environment that the Goodnoe Homestead came to be in the 1860′s, with brown rolling hills shadowing tall grasses, the school house, hotel, general store and three separate homesteads. As warm winds sing down the open plains of Klickitat County, one can only imagine family laughing and playing and enjoying the beauty of simpler times.

Chesterfield, Idaho
Our neighbors to the south in Idaho round out this list with one very impressive contribution in Chesterfield. This beautiful ghost town sits nestled in the foothills of Idaho’s Portneuf Valley. With Lava Hot Springs and Soda Springs nearby, there’s plenty for the explorer to do.

Chesterfield is significant because so many buildings remain, some marked with historical markers. It’s a great look at a historic town nestled among gorgeous valleys.

Eliminating tank-level uncertainty
Industries that keep tanks onsite struggle to consistently maintain optimal fuel levels day in and day out. Fortunately, technology has provided an answer.

Thanks to satellite tank monitoring systems, facilities can quickly and efficiently access their tanks’ level in real time from just about anywhere in the world. Is the tank low or does it require maintenance? That data can easily be gleaned through these systems.

Who wants to rely on pre-scheduled fill times that may be inaccurate? Conditions change and a tank’s desired level isn’t a reliable constant. To avoid wasting manpower and money, remote tank monitoring is the answer.

The fact is, there are a lot of facilities and businesses that rely on steady levels of on-site fuel, from farms to hospitals to schools. The list is simply too long to include in this one blog, but you get the idea.

Electric transportation is taking over
A number of countries have recently committed to eventually phasing out gasoline and diesel combustion vehicles completely. The most recent entrant into this agreement is China, who has said that it has plans to end production of these vehicles at an unspecified date.

Going even further, England and France have both committed to phasing out gasoline vehicles by 2040. Norway and the Netherlands have set even more ambitious targets, planning to end gasoline vehicle sales by 2025. Still, the move by China represents a sea change in the world of modern vehicle production.

China is the world’s biggest car market, so making this change should have a huge impact on car makers as they turn their eyes towards mass-market electric vehicle production. But will auto manufacturers be able to step up so that the countries who have made these commitments can meet their goals?

It appears so. In fact, earlier this year China predicted green vehicle sales in excess of 800,000 units in 2017. This represents a larger number then the United States, Britain, and France combined.

The prime reason China is moving in this direction is pollution. Vehicles and industrial plants contribute to choking smog in large cities across China. The country has already put driving restrictions on inner city areas, much like London did with cars traveling to the center of the city during certain times during the day.

Chinese-owned Volvo has announced that every new vehicle it produces starting in 2019 will include at least one electric motor. And with American companies like Nikola and even Tesla planning mass production of electric semi trucks, the market is in for rapid change.

Now the question is, what will all these moves towards greater electric car adoption do to the oil market? As oil consumption continues to drop, so do prices. Will the oil industry be able to sustain itself or will we see a wholesale evolution in transportation? Only time will tell.

A primer on global sources of energy
The past 100 years has seen global quality of life indexes go through the roof. Whether it be through the spread of amenities brought on by globalization or greater distribution of electricity, on the whole, people are living better than ever before.

Every day all over the world, billions of people access everything from computers to public transportation to cell phones and so much more. Technology has opened many doors.

Yet, have you ever considered where the energy we use comes from? The fact is, the energy we use is produced through a conversion of some potential energy, whether it be renewable (solar, wind, hydroelectric) or fossil fuels (gasoline, oil).

There are a number of different sources of fuel available for human use, yet some are practical and some are not.

In fact, according to the United States’ Energy Information Administration, the amount of energy available from all the power sources in the world amounts to a whopping 155,481 TeraWatt-hours, as of 2014. Only about 70 percent of that number is actually used.

So, where is it all coming from?

  • Coal: Though coal is now on the decline, it still accounts for around a third of global energy production. In total, around 8 billion tons is burned annually.
  • Oil: Whether diesel, gasoline, liquefied petroleum or otherwise, oil has been the dominant energy source for nearly a century.
  • Gas: Liquid natural gas (LNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) are making a big push. Currently gas produces around 20% of the world’s energy needs.


    • Although renewable energy is making a big push, it currently accounts for less than 2% of global consumption. As more companies and individuals look for alternative sources of energy, we can logically expect that number to rise. It will be interesting to see what kind of impact those changes will have, and the various ways oil and gas will continue to play a role.
